FAQs

Probate Loan Questions

A probate loan (also called an inheritance loan or estate loan) is a short-term advance secured against a deceased person’s estate. It allows executors or beneficiaries to access funds before probate is granted — to pay HMRC, cover estate costs, or access an inheritance share early. The loan is repaid from the estate when probate completes.

A probate loan is secured against the estate rather than the individual. This means no credit check, no monthly repayments, no personal security required, and no personal liability if the estate later proves insufficient. A personal loan by contrast requires a credit check, monthly repayments from personal income, and full personal liability for the debt.

Simple estates with a clear IHT reference or confirmed entitlement can be processed in 3–7 days. More complex estates typically take 7–14 days. We will confirm a realistic timescale as part of the free comparison process.
